How do you return to a place that was once your home, when your memories of it are fleeting yet resonant, like an echo?

After decades away from the land where she was born, Zoe Krylova returns to Cyprus and to her own memory. She does not return to see the island as a visitor, but to listen to it, to retrieve the reverberation of her origins, and to trace the shadows of a childhood recollection that ties her to her mother, the family she left behind, and her roots.

Through the poems and photographs of “The Moon Carved Sea”, Krylova explores the invisible thread connecting personal recollection to one’s place of origin. A daughter of the diaspora, suspended between two continents and two languages, she writes of belonging, loss, and return. The book traverses both time and sea. From Nicosia in 1967, to Pennsylvania in the 1970s, and back to present-day Cyprus.

Her return is both internal and artistic. The photographs become living representations, the poems turn into letters, and language itself becomes a home rebuilt from the ground up. Through this introspective process, etching her memories and emotions onto paper, Krylova discovers that she cannot write about place without writing about her mother. In writing, she realizes that these two elements of her identity illuminate the traces of her own history: “In trying to write about place, I discovered that I could not do so without writing about my mother. My mother and Cyprus are intertwined mysteries. This work is my first descent into the archives of the self”.

Zoe Krylova’s encounter with Kyriaki Costa during her most recent visit to Nicosia became the spark for the creation of “The Moon Carved Sea”, which now forms part of the Delivering Views – Delivering Texts publication series of the Phaneromenis 70 Cultural Foundation. Immersing herself in her own world and attuning to the sounds of the present, she offers a work that embodies the very elements defining our time and place. Gathering fragments of memory, emotion, and heritage, she weaves them together with the awareness of a world in constant crisis. The poems and photographs become instruments for reading history, as well as vehicles of personal and collective remembrance, revealing the subtle interplay between place, identity, and poetic expression.

Delivering Views – Delivering Texts
The current project ‘Delivering Views-Delivering Texts’ of the Cultural Centre Phaneromenis 70 is based on exchanges of images and texts focused on Nicosia and Cyprus. In recent years, we've been collecting photos and texts sent to us by tourists who visited Cyprus, which help us achieve a new approach and interpretation of our hometown through the foreigner’s point of view. The archive material compiled is periodically delivered to editors, intellectuals or artists, so that they comment by choice on anything that moves them. Our ambition is to stimulate the senses, the emotions and thoughts through the circulation of images and ideas, so as to start a new conversation on things that we – through our own movements – miss or don't register.
We are waiting for you to take a walk around the island through the images and texts of our wanderers!

Πώς επιστρέφεις σε έναν τόπο που κάποτε υπήρξε σπίτι σου, όταν οι αναμνήσεις σου από εκεί είναι φευγαλέες, αλλά έντονες σαν ηχώ;

Η Zoe Krylova, έπειτα από δεκαετίες μακριά από τον τόπο όπου γεννήθηκε, επιστρέφει στην Κύπρο και στη μνήμη της. Δεν επιστρέφει για να αντικρίσει το νησί με τη ματιά του απλού επισκέπτη. Επιστρέφει για να το αφουγκραστεί, να ανασύρει τον απόηχο της καταγωγής της και να ψηλαφίσει τις σκιές μιας παιδικής ανάμνησης, που την συνδέουν με τη μητέρα της, την οικογένεια που άφησε πίσω και τις ρίζες της.

Μέσα από τα ποιήματα και τις φωτογραφίες του «The Moon Carved Sea», η Krylova εξερευνά το αόρατο νήμα που συνδέει τις προσωπικές μνήμες με τον τόπο της καταγωγής ενός ανθρώπου. Κόρη της διασποράς, ανάμεσα σε δύο ηπείρους και δύο γλώσσες, γράφει για το ανήκειν, την απώλεια και την επιστροφή. Το βιβλίο διασχίζει το χρόνο και τις θάλασσες. Από τη Λευκωσία του 1967, στην Πενσυλβάνια των ’70s και πίσω στην Κύπρο του σήμερα.

Η επιστροφή της είναι ταυτόχρονα εσωτερική και καλλιτεχνική. Οι φωτογραφίες μετατρέπονται σε ζωντανές αναπαραστάσεις, τα ποιήματα σε επιστολές και η γλώσσα γίνεται ένα σπίτι που χτίζεται από την αρχή. Μέσω αυτής της ενδοσκόπησης και προσπαθώντας να χαράξει τις αναμνήσεις της και τα συναισθήματά της πάνω στο χαρτί, η Krylova ανακαλύπτει πως δεν μπορεί να μιλήσει για τον τόπο χωρίς να μιλήσει για τη μητέρα της. Γράφοντας συνειδητοποιεί, πως αυτά τα δύο στοιχεία της ταυτότητάς της καταλήγουν να φωτίζουν τα ίχνη της προσωπικής της ιστορίας. «Στην προσπάθειά μου να γράψω για τον τόπο, ανακάλυψα πως δεν μπορούσα να γράψω γι’ αυτόν χωρίς να γράψω για τη μητέρα μου. Η μητέρα μου και η Κύπρος αποτελούν αλληλένδετα μυστήρια. Αυτό το έργο είναι η πρώτη κατάδυση στα αρχεία του εαυτού μου».

Η γνωριμία της Zoe Krylova με την Κυριακή Κώστα, κατά την τελευταία της επίσκεψη στη Λευκωσία, αποτέλεσε και το έναυσμα για τη συγγραφή του «The Moon Carved Sea», που εντάσσεται πλέον στη σειρά εκδόσεων Delivering Views – Delivering Texts του Πολιτιστικού Ιδρύματος Φανερωμένης 70. Καταδυόμενη στον δικό της κόσμο και αφουγκραζόμενη τους ήχους του παρόντος παραδίδει σε εμάς ένα έργο που διαπνέει όλα αυτά τα στοιχεία που χαρακτηρίζουν την εποχή μας και τον τόπο μας. Συγκεντρώνει θραύσματα μνήμης, αισθημάτων και κληρονομιάς και τα πλέκει με τη συνείδηση ενός κόσμου σε διαρκή κρίση. Τα ποιήματα και οι φωτογραφίες μετατρέπονται σε εργαλεία ανάγνωσης της ιστορίας, αλλά και σε μέσο προσωπικής και συλλογικής μνήμης, αναδεικνύοντας την αλληλεπίδραση ανάμεσα στον τόπο, την ταυτότητα και την ποιητική έκφραση.

Το συνεχές πρόγραμμα «Delivering Views – Delivering Texts» του Πολιτιστικού Κέντρου Φανερωμένης 70 βασίζεται σε ανταλλαγές εικόνων και κειμένων με επίκεντρο τη Λευκωσία και την Κύπρο. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, συλλέγουμε φωτογραφίες και κείμενα που μας στέλνουν τουρίστες που επισκέφθηκαν την Κύπρο, τα οποία μας βοηθούν να επιτύχουμε μια νέα προσέγγιση και ερμηνεία της χώρας, μέσα από τη ματιά του άλλου. Το αρχειακό υλικό που συντάσσεται παραδίδεται περιοδικά σε συντάκτες, διανοούμενους ή καλλιτέχνες, ώστε να σχολιάζουν κατ' επιλογή οτιδήποτε τους συγκινεί. Φιλοδοξία μας είναι να διεγείρουμε τις αισθήσεις, τα συναισθήματα και τις σκέψεις μέσω της ανταλλαγής εικόνων και ιδεών, ώστε να ξεκινήσουμε μια νέα συζήτηση για στοιχεία που –στην πορεία μας– χάνουμε.
